A microfiction for Clare Strahan

Untitled, acrylic on canvas

Stephanie Moss, 2008

Comment by Sir Peter Butte

During her artist’s residency, Moss became involved with convicted criminal D—. Despite her six-month tenure, only one artwork remains.

This portrait of D— demonstrates Moss's purposeful use of light and shadow to enhance form. Once consolidated, the portrait is almost completely dark.

Moss later employed more aggressive painting techniques to apply the textured reds to the centre and, notably, the crying face in the corner.

The face is her daughter's, and was sculpted using a piping bag of Vantablack.

On the night D— was arrested at their home, Moss completed the piece.

Note: this artwork is intentionally slashed and burnt. Staff and security are already informed.
